Chef Tips: Valentine’s Dinner at Home

February 8, 2021

We’re in the business of celebrating love, so naturally we are fans of THE love holiday, Valentine’s Day. If you didn’t snag reservations at our restaurant, Tillie’s, or if you aren’t quite ready to go out for dinner yet, we’ve got you covered. Whim Hospitality Director of Food & Beverage, Chef Jesse Genovese is sharing tips to successfully create a delicious Valentine’s Day dinner at home… what’s not to love about that?

TIPS FROM THE CHEF:

1. Don’t over think it

Valentine’s Day should be fun and romantic for you and your loved one, go with a menu you know or are familiar with. Valentine’s Day is not the time to take on a complex meal. Find a recipe that is special, but manageable for your skill level. Need some inspiration? Check out this Bistro-style chicken tutorial.

2. Hit the Farmer’s Market

Your local market is a wonderful place for inspiration. Walk around, speak to the vendors and find easy in-season ingredients to work with. Plus, shopping local is a win for us all.

3. Plan & prep

Write a shopping list that is broken out by menu item to ensure you get all necessary ingredients for the entire meal; this includes all spices and cooking utensils. Next, make a “prep list” and prepare any items the day before that you can (for example, chopping all vegetables, making sauces, etc.). Having a game plan will simplify things day of and allow you to enjoy the experience.

4. Two is better than one

This is Valentine’s Day after all. Leave a few things for your partner to help you with when they arrive. This could be something simple and easy like plating or garnishing. When they arrive open a bottle of wine and enjoy finishing the meal together.

5. A sweet finish

Dessert is an easy way to guarantee a sweet ending to the night. Something classic like a freshly baked cookie or brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce are always crowd pleasers. Or if you really want to impress, go for the chocolate soufflé.

6. Don’t forget the flowers

While making a meal for your significant other is quite the gesture, there is nothing like a special something for your special someone. We’re making it easy and offering designer-curated Valentine’s Day bouquets and arrangements for pickup or delivery!
