Chef Rob McMahon

Executive Chef

Raised as a Navy brat in Maryland and South Carolina, Chef Rob grew up mainly in Gulf Breeze, Florida outside of Pensacola. He attended UGA in Athens where he studied Latin and Greek (he initially wanted to be a teacher), but didn’t graduate.  Realizing that he had a different calling, he moved to New Orleans in 1991, got an apprenticeship with a French Chef, and has been hooked on cooking ever since!  Chef Rob worked in fine dining restaurants for the first few years of his culinary career before working as a Catering Chef and Garde Manger Chef at the Ritz-Carlton, and eventually winding up in the mountains of Virginia.  He went back to school, attending Johnson & Wales Culinary School in Rhode Island and graduated Summa cum Laude with an Associates in Culinary Arts in 1995. 

Chef Rob, his wife with whom he has been married for over 20 years, and three amazing children live in West Austin and enjoy going down to the lake, hanging out together, swimming, and chasing around their Boston Terrier Mortimer.  In his spare time when he is not busy cooking up another one of his tasty creations, Chef Rob loves to play golf with his Whim colleagues, listen to music, fly his parastunter kite, and catch up on his latest dvr obsessions.  He is terrified of changing lightbulbs, grew up in a town that had a UFO hoax sighting that made national news, jumped out of an airplane in a tandem parachute jump on his 40th birthday, and can still sing some of the Irish folk songs that his Dad used to blare on the stereo on Saturday mornings at 6:00 am to wake him up! 

Chef Rob's path to Whim was magical…he fell in love with Camp Lucy when he was a Chef for a catering company in North Austin.  He had been daydreaming of what it would be like to actually be the chef at a venue of Camp Lucy's caliber and decided to turn his dream into a reality.  After meeting with Whit and Kim, they gave him the opportunity of his 25+ year career and he hasn't looked back since!
